These teams help make Wiltshire a place where people love to live. A place that’s thriving and safe, with a sustainable environment for all. With dedication and strategic initiatives, colleagues such as Neighbourhood Officers and Housing Caseworkers do something amazing every day by shaping the county’s future and improving the quality of life for all.

Housing
Our four dedicated housing teams are gifted with the power to improve the lives of our residents. They link up to address critical housing needs, help people move and resettle smoothly, and reduce homelessness.

Planning
As the third largest planning authority in the country, we receive over 5,000 planning applications each year, and 3,500 building control applications. We are a critical team supporting the council to deliver a thriving economy, and sustainable development and meet housing needs, whilst protecting and enhancing the rich historic and natural environment that residents and visitors alike can enjoy.

Highways and Transport

We ensure smooth mobility for residents, visitors, and businesses. From Engineers to sustainability professionals, our skilled staff maintain and enhance Wiltshire’s infrastructure, ensuring efficient transport systems and road safety to reduce accidents.

Meanwhile, the service’s strategic initiatives are making a difference every day. They include all kinds of activities, from road maintenance to eco-friendly travel options, such as public transport and cycle paths. With sustainable travel choices, we reduce our environmental impact while giving people healthier lifestyles.

The Passenger Transport Unit, a crucial component, facilitates daily home-to-school transport for 8,500 pupils, including 1,600 with special needs. Supported by 350 wonderful and compassionate Passenger Assistants, the unit extends services to transport children in care and supports adults with learning difficulties in accessing day services.

Progression.

We know progression is important to you, but it can mean different things to different people. That’s why we’ve created a range of support tools where you can gain valuable experience, acquire new skills and embrace greater responsibilities. Each progression journey is bespoke, but we have defined some fundamental steps:

Mid-level: These require more experience and skills, often with added responsibilities.

Senior-level: These roles involve important decisions, team management, and major contributions to the organisation.

Leadership: Managing the organisation’s direction and strategy as managers or directors.

Side stepping: Switching roles or departments for diverse experience or for more education to progress or get qualifications.

Flexible working

People give their best when their job fits in with their lives. So, wherever possible, we offer flexible working. There are several options available:

  • Flexi-time scheme (for most roles)
  • Compressed or part-time hours
  • Job shares or term-time contracts where appropriate.

We’ve invested heavily in new tech to make flexible working possible.
