Jack - Land Drainage Engineer

Tell us a little bit about yourself  – your work background, your interests…

I have worked for Wiltshire Council for the past 8 years now, starting out in customer services when I was 19. I have since moved across into the highways team where I currently work in a number of different and varied roles.

What would you say is the best thing about working at Wiltshire Council, and your job specifically?

The best thing for me about working for Wiltshire Council is the variety of work I get involved in. This past year I have been fortunate enough to be involved with numerous different projects all with completely different requirements and outcomes.

I am also continually studying, being with Wiltshire Council allows me to develop academically whilst also developing my knowledge in a working environment, this has been invaluable and ensures that I have been able to apply my learning to real life scenarios.

What’s the best way to start the day?

Getting up and going for a run would be my favourite way to start the day, especially if the sun is up. (I very rarely actually do this though!)

What is the most meaningful part of your role?

Being able to genuinely help and make an impact.

I often come across people who would like something done or assistance but they never actually believe it can be delivered. So when you are able to act on this and make something happen, it makes the role feel more meaningful.

What do you wish you knew more about?

The future, then I could get ahead of the curve.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in your current role?

I’d be in my previous role, or I’d like to think I would be living in the USA as an aspiring NFL coach!

Who inspires you?

My family

Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?

Chicago, Illinois

What was the most memorable gift you’ve received?

I got some sweet Nike high top trainers once with my initials embroidered on the side.

Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?

The Fresh Prince in his prime.

What song or artist do you like but rarely admit to liking?

Sometimes I love getting into a bad mood and just listening to The Smiths.

What was the best concert you have ever attended?

Foals in Paris in 2013

What's the most daring thing you've ever done?

Jaywalked in NYC…

What is your favourite book or film, and why?

1984 by George Orwell

What is the first thing you bought with your own money?
