Emma - Trainee Building Control Surveyor

Tell us a little bit about yourself (as much as you want to reveal!) – your work background, your interests…

I have progressed from my role as a technical support officer to a trainee building control surveyor over my five years service at the council. Wiltshire Council has given me great opportunities to expand my skill set and to develop by allowing me to gain qualifications

Out of work I am interested in buildings, art, exploring, climbing and keeping fit and healthy

What would you say is the best thing about working at Wiltshire Council, and your job specifically?

Being out on site makes the job interesting and every day is diverse, you get to meet different people out on site and help people overcome problems and build strong relationships, which is very satisfying. We also receive a lot of flexibility and trust from our management which is really encouraging

The best thing about my job is my team, everybody has a huge amount of experience and they always do their best to teach me everything they know. As a trainee it’s great to have huge support from my colleagues and makes it easier to ask any questions

What’s the best way to start the day?

A massive breakfast and a catch up with colleagues

What do you wish you knew more about?

Structures, engineering, geology and physics

What's the most daring thing you've ever done?

I have skydived twice for Wiltshire Air Ambulance

What are three interesting facts about you?

  • I love outdoor climbing and bouldering
  • I love singing and used to sing in a band
  • I’m an absolute pro at the cardboard box game

What is the first thing you bought with your own money?

My first ever pair of heels – they were awful!

What would you say to someone who is thinking of applying for a role at Wiltshire Council?

It’s a great opportunity to meet and learn from a range of different people with different backgrounds. The open plan working environments make it easy to communicate and conduct certain tasks, and the flexibility enables you to maintain a healthy lifestyle, where work and life balance is very important
