Our offer

There are plenty of attractions to working for Wiltshire Council, both professional and personal. It’s a friendly, welcoming place to work, with a strong team ethic. That’s why we focus on getting the things that matter to our people right – such as flexible working, support for career development and rewards and benefits.

It’s an easy commute from neighbouring areas such as Bath, Bristol, Swindon, Somerset and Gloucestershire; but with a flexible working offer in terms of location, hours and a significant leave package you don’t have to face the 9 to 5 commute daily.

As part of our staff benefits package, we offer flexible working where possible, a generous local government pension package, 25 days holiday plus bank holidays rising to 30 after 5 years, and 25% discount on rail season tickets. we also have salary sacrifice schemes which save tax and national insurance (including cycle to work) and a range of discounts with national and local retailers through Wiltshire Rewards, our staff benefits platform.

There are plenty of benefits to working with us, check out 'What we offer' to help make sure you #LoveWhereYouWork too!

Technologies

As would be expected in supporting two modern, complex organisations, our staff deploy and manage a range of technologies and below provides a flavour of some of the keys ones:

Business Applications & Productivity Infrastructure Network, voice & video Software Development

Supporting multiple organisations comes with a raft of specific line of business systems to meet every need from Police intelligence gathering to Council planning permission; but all sitting on a Microsoft Server platform with support from our vendors and partners. Other interesting and significant applications being deployed by our staff include Police ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition), DEMS (Digital Evidence Management) Systems and Council Microsoft Dynamics CRM system.

We are engaging in a cloud first approach for new applications and services, increasing our use of SaaS.

Wiltshire Council already utilises O365 for mail and office applications with an ongoing Sharepoint Online project; alongside looking at the solutions coming out from O365 such as  Staffhub, Teams and Yammer.

Our infrastructure is mostly currently on-site HP server solutions within a purpose built data centre, supported using Microsoft System Centre (SCCM, SCOM, VMM), virtualised on a Hyper-V platform with a Microsoft DPM backup solution.

Our significant infrastructure programme is looking at the potential available in IaaS solutions, along with virtualisation and backup consolidation removing duplicate technologies and moving to the newest Windows Server operating system.

Like most organisations we use Skype heavily in both Wiltshire Police and Wiltshire Council but also Mitel telephony, specialist communication equipment within the Police 999 control centre and the Airwave radio system.

For networking solutions, we have a Juniper estate which has only recently been upgraded giving exposure to some of the newest networking technologies on the market.

We have just moved to Microsoft Intune for the support of Bring Your Own Device within Wiltshire Council and use Airwatch to manage the secured Police smartphones.

We also develop software using the Agile SCRUM approach utilising Visual Studio Team Services and deploying software to an Azure environment.

Our new software is written in C# and we are embarking on a significant piece of work to review legacy solutions on PHP to see how we can replace or make them easier to manage alongside reviewing the platforms (Windows Server/Service Fabric/PaaS) we run our solutions from.
