Andy Milsom, Building Control Surveyor

My name is Andy Milsom, I have worked for Wiltshire Council since it was formed under the unitary process a little over 2 years ago, and previously I was employed by West Wiltshire District Council who I joined in 2002 as a Building Control Surveyor and continue in this role with Wiltshire Council.

I did my initial training and studying before the unitary process, the district council were very proactive towards personal qualification and development. All surveyors need to keep their CPD (Continued Professional Development) record up to date to maintain membership of their professional body, this requires attending appropriate courses and seminars on current technical information and legislation.

I work as part of a team that check building works for compliance with national building regulations and other applicable standards. This is done through checking architects plans where submitted to the council and inspection whilst works are in progress on site.

The best aspect of my job is working with applicants, architects and builders to achieve their building designs and objectives and, varied projects and working environments. During my career there have been many individually grand properties which have been interesting to work on, an underground house sticks in the mind. It had a sunken open courtyard and a grass roof, a unique design making it very interesting.

I enjoy working for Wiltshire Council because of the attractive locality and flexible working practices. There is also good support from both managers and colleagues.
