Age and Employment
We are committed to building a workforce which broadly reflects the diversity of the local community and we encourage applications for employment from people of different age groups.
We are committed to ensuring that there will be no discrimination against any employee, worker or job applicant, either directly or indirectly on grounds of age, in access to employment, training, working conditions, treatment at work, promotion or dismissal.
We recognise that such discrimination occurs because of inaccurate assumptions based on prejudice about and stereotypes of younger or older people, often because they are considered "too old” or “too young." We will actively combat this discrimination and aim to ensure equality of opportunity. Recruitment or development and training decisions will not use age related criteria.
Our Application Forms when sent for short listing do not hold details relating to age or dates of birth so age will not be a factor in selecting candidates for interview. This means that candidates over age 65 may be interviewed for vacancies with the County Council. However the normal retirement age for County Council employees is age 65 and we can refuse to employ someone who is older than, or within six months of, our normal retirement age. An offer of employment may only be made to an over 65 year old if the following conditions have been met.
- That the succession planning of the area concerned is not unduly affected by the recruitment of a person above the normal retirement age so that sufficient continuity and knowledge will remain in place should there be a retirement of that individual in the near future.
- The candidate has the ability to do the job.
- The candidate has the abilty to contribute to the organisation's effectiveness.
- The candidate has the potential for development.
- The appointment of any individual who is older than, or within six months of, our normal retirement age will be made subject to our right to give due notice of retirement at any time during the employment.
