Ethnicity and Employment
We are committed to building a workforce which broadly reflects the diversity of the local community and we encourage applications from people of different ethnic backgrounds.
We are committed to ensuring that there will be no discrimination against any employee, worker or job applicant, either directly or indirectly on grounds of ethnicity, in access to employment, training, working conditions, treatment at work, promotion or dismissal.
The Race Relations Act 1976 as amended by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 gives public authorities a general duty to promote race equality so we need all our staff to aim to end discrimination due to race or ethnicity, to encourage real equality of opportunity and a respect for racial diversity and to respect the cultural differences of people from different racial or ethnic groups. The duty applies to all public authorities, including Wiltshire County Council.
Under the duty, when carrying out its functions, the Council must aim to:
- eliminate unlawful racial discrimination
- promote equality of opportunity, and
- promote good relations between people of different racial groups
Race Equality Scheme
To meets its duty the Council is required to publish a Race Equality Scheme which includes an action plan. Our first Scheme was produced in May 2002. The revised Scheme covers the period May 2005 to may 2008, and will be reviewed on an annual basis to include public consultation.
