Liam - Community Engagement Manager (1)

Tell us a little bit about yourself – your work background, your interests…

I have been with Wiltshire Council for 8 years now in a variety of roles from leisure management to HR and OD. I am currently employed as Community Engagement Manager for the Westbury community area. A really exciting and varied post that allows me to really get to know what makes our Wiltshire communities “tick”. This is not your typical 9-5 work and I guess that is part of the attraction for me. One day I’ll be meeting a community group who want to develop a local project, the next I’m at an evening meeting with elected members devolving services to the public or agreeing an asset transfer of a facility.I am married with 4 young children, you have no idea (or maybe you do) how busy it is with a 8 year old, 7 year twins and a 3 year old! We are a really active family with the children involved in everything from kickboxing to horse riding – neither of which I am any good at might I add!In what little spare time my wife and I have together away from the children we like to eat out and are big fans of red wine – again I know nothing about it other than it tastes good J

What makes you have a good day at work?

A good day at work for me is made up of helping local communities do more for themselves. The Wiltshire Council ethos of not being a local authority that does things to people but rather allows them to do more for themselves is what my role is all about.

Some of the best days are meeting enthusiastic community groups who have big plans and ambition for their town or village. It is great to see the passion and commitment that exists within Wiltshire and being able to assist with grant funding makes it all the better.

What's the best thing about working at Wiltshire Council?

Wiltshire Council recognises the importance of a work-life balance and you can’t put a price on that. I’ve also been lucky enough to follow a varied yet progressive career path in Local Government and I sincerely hope that continues for many years to come.

The flexibility in working hours is a god send for someone like myself with such a hectic home life. I might occasionally send an email at 06:30 or 22:30 but that means I haven’t missed sports day or the nativity play at the children’s school.

Is there anything you wished would come back into fashion?

I’ve never been a big follower of fashions, in fact I am already turning in to “that Dad” that questions what on earth my daughters are wearing!

What's the most unusual thing you've ever eaten?

Caviar. I don’t see what the fuss is all about; give me a cheese sandwich any day!

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island?

Well I have 4 children so someone has to miss out!

I guess I would have to take a picture of my family, a decent bottle of wine and some sun cream – I get burnt most years!

What's the most daring thing you've ever done

I don’t know about daring but certainly a little embarrassing was appearing on a television advert for a well known online electrical retailer! The advert has played on national television and I think it’s safe to say that I won’t be giving up the day job any time soon. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8BgRBHaQMM

If you could share a meal with any 4 individuals, living or dead, who would they be?

Jeremy Clarkson – obnoxious and controversial Dana White - UFC President, Ian Wright – Arsenal legend, Rik Mayall – comedy genius

What would go into you room 101...

Tottenham Hotspur, Peppa Pig – you wouldn’t believe how many repeats of this a father of 4 has seen! Smoking

What is your favourite music for your commute to work?

I listen to BBC Radio 1 or Five Live

What is your favourite book or film, and why?

Favourite film is Rocky IV – This one doesn’t need explaining surely!?

What is your ideal holiday destination?

I have always wanted to visit Australia and dive on the great barrier reef

What is the first thing you bought with your own money?

Not sure it was the first thing I ever bought although I remember saving up as a kid for a Tamagotchi virtual pet……. Technology has moved on a bit since

What pets do you have?

3 cats called Tudor, Stu-bob and Belle. A Labradoodle puppy called Willow
