A #DayInTheLife of a Pest Controller

A #DayInTheLife of a Pest Controller

Hey Ben, tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi my name’s Ben, and I’m 40 years old! Outside of work I enjoy football, boxing, shooting, hunting and ferreting. I also have a keen interest in dog training.

How long have you been in your role?

I’ve been a professional pest controller for ten years, but I have been catching rats since I was sixteen, with the help of my first terrier and ferret.

What is the best thing about being a pest controller?

The best thing about my role is being able to help people, and the fact that every job is different!

What is the weirdest query you’ve had to deal with?

I’ve seen some great things in this job, like a badger with cubs under someone’s shed! I would say that one of the weirdest I’ve been called out to was probably when a couple thought they had rats in their loft but it turned out to be stoats. However, I also get sent pots of fluff or skin from people who think they are being bitten by something; they try to trap the pest, and then send it over to me.

What would you say to someone who is thinking of applying for a role at Wiltshire Council?

Pest control at the council is great! You do need to be flexible with your thinking and able to think outside the box. It also helps to not have a fear of enclosed spaces or rats.
